In this final year and looking back across five years of implementation, the Alliance can point to a strong and lasting legacy. Communities secured governance over millions of hectares of forest, landmark policy victories were won from Uganda to the Philippines, and the rights and safety of environmental defenders were strengthened across all programme countries. This programme ends. The work of the communities and defenders who drove it does not.

Shifting the decision-making power in conservation efforts from distant actors to those with ancestral, cultural, relational, material and/or spiritual ties to the land is a promising and necessary way forward. IP&LCs know best how to care for and defend the land, often based on generations of knowledge accumulation. A new report on locally-led sustainable development, co-produced by IUCN NL and Tropenbos International, gives insight into the perspectives and experiences of partners in the GLA.

In this penultimate year, the Alliance deepened its impact across all three pathways of change: strengthening IP&LC-led forest governance, challenging deforestation drivers, and defending civic space in increasingly constrained environments. At the same time, we launched a deliberate, forward-looking phase-out process grounded in the conviction that the end of a funding cycle must not erase the gains it has enabled.
